Hello. I have been researching my family history and DNA results have brought me to this area! I am interested in the third photograph which shows Island Cottage in the background.
My direct ancestor is John Macdonald (my great grandfather) born in 1859 in Fort Augustus and he married Ann Kennedy in 1885 in Inverness. He was a journeyman tailor and by 1905 had met and married a woman in London, who became my great grandmother. Sadly Ann Kennedy was left to bring up their family alone and the children thought their dad had died.
I have been researching Ann Kennedy’s family and found she had a brother called Kenneth, born round 1850, who was recorded as living at Island Cottage in Inverfarigaig when he was the informant at his mum’s death in 1913. Their father was called John Kennedy and the mother was Flora Macdonald (although I am seeing her on some records as Macdonell).
I know it’s a long shot but I wonder if anyone has any information about this cottage and its history? I don’t know if it would have been rented when Kenneth Kennedy lived there. He was also there on the 1911 census, as an Estate worker, with his wife Catherine McGillivray and one of his sons Angus, who was a furnaceman at the aluminium works.
It would be lovely to hear from anyone, and thank you for reading.
